In 1837, the Barossa Valley was named by South Australia's first Surveyor General, Colonel William Light. The area name comes from a place with the same name in Spain. Barossa was founded in 1842 by German settlers and English. The group largest was German, since he had escaped religious persecution, and within months had become the full area of German culture that has remained until today and is sure to follow in the future.
Settlements were established at Bethany in 1842, and followed closely by Angaston, Krondorfer, Ebenezer, Penrice, Light Pass & Langmeil. Langmeil was established in 1843 by German Lutherans with Pastor Kavel, more settlements and the Lutheran Church began towers increased across the region.
The settlers in the Barossa Valley is considered working people, immigrants with real value to the area and South Australia. English, Irish and Scottish also settled in the area and attended Catholic, Anglican and Methodist churches.
The Germans were the most dominant culture established in the valley. They were strong at parties, customs, religion, songs, food, houses, and language with some older people still speak today in Germany. For over 100 years have followed German defending their culture in the region of Barossa Valley.
Living standards are difficult for the early settlers and extracted with common carp and wattle and daub huts. With hard work and prosperity of the settlers were quick to quarry stone built houses excavated built with thick walls to keep calm and last the test of time. Many households in the 1860s are still used today and have been renovated and maintained.
The first settler was Barossa naturalized German citizen on 24 May 1839, Europe was experiencing financial difficulties as the decade of 1840 and 50, many more Germans arrived in the Barossa Valley. The German language remained the main language for many years due to the direction of the Lutheran Church and the desire to maintain the German community. German education in schools was encouraged in order to help preserve the German heritage in the Barossa.
In 1847, a newspaper Germany was known as the Australische Die Deutsche Zeitung. The document was the brain child of Johann Menge and Carl Kornhardt.
The Barossa Valley is less than 90 minutes from Adelaide International Airport and the cars can be rented at the airport or you can take a tour of Adelaide City and check out all the doors basement and restaurants. Make sure you head up the hill Mengla to see all the Barossa, from a larger perspective.
