Bull Riding in the 21st Century
The dust raising, bone jangling sport that pits bull rider against bovine athlete will bring the best in the world together on the professional level in 2009. The event titles are big money on both sides of the bull rope. Cowboys and bulls both win hundreds of thousands of dollars in event prize money and there will be millions for the rider that captures this year’s world title. Professional events are held all over the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Canada and in Australia. The Professional Bull Rider’s Tour is the most well known example of what professional bull riding is all about these days so we’ll use this as an example.
The science of genetics has resulted in the strongest pool of bulls ever. Stock contractors will be trucking bulls out of bloodlines from Oscar, Little Yellow Jacket, Mossy Oak Mudslinger, and the original Plummmer lines all over the country. All of the advanced reproductive technology methods are being employed in the bucking bull business making this an exciting aspect of ranching for the science buff. Bull breeding involves a lot more than putting a bull and a cow in a pasture together these days.
In each match-up the bull rider attempts to ride his bull for 8 seconds. While the bull rider holds on to a rope wrapped around the bull with one hand, his freehand may not touch the bull anywhere during the ride. If the rider comes off before the 8 seconds are up, the rider nets no score from the ride. Events typically feature several “long rounds” where each rider invited to the event gets a chance to ride a bull in each round. Then comes a championship round called the “short round” where the 15 riders with the best total scores from the long rounds each try to ride one more bull The highest total score earns the bull rider the event championship title, belt buckle and a hefty paycheck.
Earnings from the year’s tour are kept in tally and the bull rider with the most dollars come the end of the Finals becomes the year’s World Champion. The bull riders vote for the Bull of the Year which is also awarded at the Finals in Las Vegas and brings the winning bull’s owner a hefty prize. It also virtually guarantee’s the winning bull a comfortable future as a breeding stud. This sport, called the most extreme of the extreme sports, is not for the faint of heart.
