Why are my images so grainy?
I have a Nikon D80 and the wedding season with many of my friends are hooked, but I've noticed that many of my pictures are coming out very grainy. These are generally low light times and often I pull out my 70-300 objective to learn about from where I sit. But as I go through them many of my paintings show a good amount of grain. I have tried to adjust the ISO, now I have it set to 640, but I'm afraid to go high grain since I have more experience with a higher ISO. Does anyone have some tips of how to compensate for this? I have an external flash and the flash of the camera, both of which have diffusers to if that helps. Thank you!
In short, your problem is shooting in low light with ISO 640. Unaware that 70-300 lens is using, I bet it has on opening f/4-f/5.6, and this is not fast enough to work in low light. Are you the "official" photographer? If so, or even if it is, has to approach so that you can use a shorter and therefore faster lens. You did not mention what shutter speeds or apertures which are using, but another option is to get a tripod, or at least a monopod to allow for faster shutter slower than the handheld and lower ISO. Practice shooting in low light, using various combinations of settings so you know what you need to use different situations. Good luck!
